Wickenheiser International Women's Hockey Festival

About the Wickenheiser International Women's Hockey Festival

November 17 through 20, 2011 (Games begin the morning of the 18th)

Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada  (Just outside of Vancouver, BC)

More than a competition... More than a tournament...

... It's a celebration of the sport and the young women who play the game!

The Wickenheiser International Women's Hockey Festival welcomes you to the second year of this spectacular event. Held in beautiful Burnaby, British Columbia this festival again promises to be different than any international female tournament before. The Festival is an event where young women can engage in world-class competition; make friends from around the world; improve their hockey skills and learn from one of the world's best - Hayley Wickenheiser - who will be involved in all aspects of the on and off-ice event for the duration.

Over the course of four days, over 1,000+ players will compete and connect while building positive female hockey experiences across all levels.

Beyond the Competition

Clinics and workshops delivered throughout the course of the weekend preliminarily include:

  • Beyond the Minors – A look at what’s next for young players both in and out of the game.
  • “Get your Game On” Equipment Clinic – A great chance to try out some new gear and get properly fitted by experts.
  • Fuelling for Gold – An examination of the contributing factors for on and off-ice success including nutrition, rest and fitness delivered by top-level hockey personalities.
  • Hot Stove – A roundtable discussion featuring Hayley and some very special guests (last year this session was moderated by the newly announced women’s program manager at IIHF).
  • Parents as ‘Coaches’– A question and answer period with Tom and Marilyn Wickenheiser. (Parents only session).
  • Coach’s Clinic– Tips, tricks, suggestions and insights on coaching women delivered by high-level female coaching personalities, such as Team Canada coaching personnel.

Special sessions and events take place, including:

  • An on-ice demo and a shinny game with Hayley Wickenheiser and special 2011 guests (TBA; included Trevor Linden in 2010).
  • A VIP opening reception open to players, coaches and parents and featuring special guests (on the evening of the 17th).
  • Hockey Canada Skills Development programming for individuals (particularly those from communities where access to female teams is limited and full tournament participation is not possible, such as rural communities

In addition....

  • Accessibility to Hayley, because this event was not only named in Hayley’s honour, but is her personal passion. Hayley is on-site for the duration of the weekend interacting with the players at a very grassroots level (on-ice, informal and formal autograph sessions, awarding championships or in pre-game locker room visits).
  • It’s an event that incorporates all skill levels at all ages, which is uncommon of a typical hockey tournament.
  • This is a Festival of the game that engages players, parents, coaches and officials in further learning and development opportunities.
