Young Women Gained Skills, Played Competitively and Learned From Sports Greats such as Hayley Wickenheiser, Pat Quinn and Mason Raymond
Over 1,000 young women from across Canada, the U.S. converged in Burnaby, B.C. to participate in the second annual Wickenheiser International Women’s Hockey Festival. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete and learn from the some of the most elite athletes, sports personalities and trainers in the world took place from November 18 - November 21 at Burnaby 8 Rinks in British Columbia.
A total of 64 teams across 10 of divisions competed in the tournament in addition to attending the off-ice clinics and presentations.
“I hope that the young women who participated in this event really left here with a sense of ‘why not me?’ And that they can do anything they set their minds to,” says Hayley Wickenheiser, three-time Olympic gold medalist.
Special guests at the festival included Olympians and Wickenheiser’s teammate, Bobbi-Jo Slusar and Olympic swimmer, Annamay Pierse. Highly regarded coaches, scouts and trainers such as Mel Davidson, Syl Corbett and Kelsey Andries held sessions that addressed everything from coaching techniques to interactive footwork for players.
A special guest appearance was made by Vancouver Canucks superstar, Mason Raymond. Hayley also hosted former NHL coach Pat Quinn and his daughter Kalli in a ‘Fireside Chat’ that gave attendees an intimate chance to hear about the Quinn’s take on the parent/coach dynamic as well as many other topics.
The event was also used as a scouting venue for some of the top female hockey scouts.
“The opportunity that our girls have with the totally inclusive approach where our girls can play great hockey, but also learn from the best of the best off the ice too, is phenomenal,” said Moe Velji, who’s daughter plays for the Burnaby Wildcats, the partner minor hockey association to the festival.
The event does more than just provide opportunity for the 1,000+ young women both on and off the ice, but also helps raise awareness and funds for two organizations very near and dear to Wickenheiser – Right To Play and KidSport BC.
